What Valley Ground Asks of Masonry

On Valley clay, a wall without drainage behind it becomes a dam: water builds up, pressure grows, and the wall bulges, cracks, or leans. Why Retaining Walls Fail, and What a Good One Has That a Cheap One Skips
A retaining wall is one of the few things in a yard that is genuinely holding something back, and when one fails it tends to fail all at once. The difference between a wall that stands quietly for decades and one that bulges and leans in a few years is almost entirely behind it, in the parts you cannot see after backfill. If you understand those, you can tell a real wall from a pretty one.
The first is drainage. Soil holds water, and on Valley clay it holds a lot. A retaining wall with no way to relieve that water becomes a dam, and the pressure that builds behind it, called hydrostatic pressure, is what pushes walls over. A wall built to last has gravel backfill against its back face and weep holes or a drain line at the bottom, so water collects and escapes instead of piling up. Leave that out, and the wall might look fine for a season or two, then start to bow the first wet winter. We build the drainage in every time, because on clay it is not optional.
The second is the footing and reinforcement. A wall has to sit on a footing sized and set below grade for what it holds, and taller walls need steel reinforcement and, for block, grout-filled cells so the wall acts as one strong unit rather than a stack that can be pushed apart. Skip the footing depth or the reinforcement, and the wall has nothing to resist the load with. We size the footing to the wall and reinforce it for the height, so between the drainage and the structure, the wall does the one job it exists to do, quietly, for a very long time.
