What Valley Ground and Sun Do to a Fence
A fence in the Central Valley faces two hard forces, and both work below the surface where you cannot see them. The first is the ground. Much of the Valley sits on clay and hardpan that swells when wet and shrinks when dry, and that seasonal movement constantly works on fence posts. A post set too shallow or without enough concrete loosens over a few seasons, and once the posts move, the whole fence leans. The posts are the fence, and how deep and how well they are set is what decides whether it stands straight for decades or starts leaning in a few years.
The second force is the sun. Relentless Valley UV and triple-digit heat are hard on wood, drying it out, graying it, and opening checks and cracks over time. Good material selection and a seal after installation slow that down and keep a wood fence looking right longer. It is also part of why block walls are popular here: block does not dry out, warp, or need repainting, and it stands up to the sun indefinitely.

Why Two Fences From the Same Wood Last Twenty Years or Five
A wood fence in the Valley lives or dies at one point you never think about after it is built: where the post meets the ground. Two fences built from the same lumber, on the same street, can stand straight for twenty years or start leaning in five, and the reason is almost always in the posts, not the pickets.
Depth and concrete are the whole story. Valley clay swells when it takes on winter moisture and shrinks as it dries through summer, and that movement pushes and pulls on every post in the fence. A post set deep enough, in enough concrete, has the mass and the grip in solid ground to resist that movement and stay plumb. A post set shallow or in a skimpy dab of concrete does not, and once a few posts start to tip, the rails and pickets carry the lean right down the line. From the street it looks like the fence failed. It did not; the posts did, and they failed because of how they were set. We set posts deep and in a full measure of concrete for exactly this reason.
The rest is material and gates. Choosing sound lumber and sealing the fence after it has dried out a few weeks slows the graying and checking that Valley sun causes, so the wood lasts and looks right longer. And gates, the part of a fence that gets used every day, have to be built square, braced, and hung on solid posts, or they sag and stop latching within a season. None of this is exotic; it is just the difference between building a fence to stand and building one to sell, and it is why ours are still straight when the cheap ones down the block are leaning.
