What Valley Ground and Heat Do to Concrete and Pavers
Concrete and pavers face a specific set of challenges in the Central Valley, and building for them is the whole job. Much of the Valley sits on expansive clay and hardpan that swells when wet and shrinks when dry, and that constant movement is what lifts, cracks, and separates hardscape that was set on a poor base. The slab you see is only as good as the ground and prep you do not see.
Heat is the second factor. Long stretches of triple-digit days expand concrete and can open cracks where control joints were skipped or spaced wrong. Proper joint layout gives the slab somewhere to move so it cracks where you planned rather than across the middle of the patio. On pavers, the same movement shows up as shifting and lippage when the base and edge restraint were rushed.
Drainage ties it together. Water that pools against or under a slab softens the base and accelerates every one of these problems. We grade hardscape to shed water and build in drainage where it is needed, so the driveway or patio stays flat and intact through wet winters and dry summers alike. What Actually Decides Whether Concrete Lasts in the Valley
Two driveways can look identical the day the forms come off and be completely different jobs. What sets them apart is underground, in three things you will never see once the concrete cures: the base, the control joints, and the drainage.
Take the base. Concrete and pavers only perform as well as what is under them. On the expansive clay and hardpan common across the Valley, hardscape set on unprepared or poorly compacted ground moves as the soil swells and shrinks, and that movement is what cracks slabs and shifts pavers. We excavate to the right depth, install and compact a proper base, and correct grade so the surface has solid, stable support that does not heave. It takes the most time and shows the least, and it is the honest reason one driveway lasts decades and another cracks in its first year.
Then the joints and the drainage. Concrete expands in heat and contracts as it cures and cools, and it will crack somewhere, so control joints tell it where. Skip them or space them wrong and the slab cracks across the open field instead. Pavers need edge restraint and joint sand so the field cannot spread. And all of it needs water to drain away rather than pool underneath and soften the base. We joint the concrete, restrain and sand the pavers, and grade for drainage, so what you paid for stays flat and intact through Valley heat and winter rain alike.

How much do concrete or pavers cost?
It depends on the square footage, the finish, and how much base and drainage work the site needs. Broom concrete, stamped concrete, pavers, and flagstone are all different price points. After we measure, you get an itemized estimate.
Which is better, concrete or pavers?
Both are good when built right. Concrete, especially stamped and colored, gives a seamless custom look for less. Pavers flex with ground movement, resist cracking, and let you replace one unit if it is ever damaged. We walk you through the trade-offs for your project.
Why does concrete crack, and can you prevent it?
